5 Jahre am „oberen Ende der Altersspanne“
[english below]

EMEYF and Me
5 Years at the “Upper End of the Age Range”
I first met EMEYF at the age of 35. The gatherings – online because of the pandemic – and the people there struck me as warm and interesting. At the time, I was already tinkering with the first ideas for the “Harmless Art” project, and together with a few friends I ran the very first online workshop experiments in creative work with natural materials. EMEYF became my second Quaker home, alongside my local worship group. And from the very beginning it was clear that this connection had an expiry date: “35ish”, which I was already right in the middle of.
Shortly afterwards, my life was turned upside down by the death of my husband. And it was precisely because of this that I felt so at ease and held within EMEYF, for I suddenly found myself asking much the same questions as the mid-twenty-somethings: should I move to another city, or another country? What should I do about work? Where is the balance between friends, family, and the meaning of life? The EMEYF community sat with me in my grief, sent me the EMEYF quilt, and did not let me be alone. For that I was, and remain, endlessly grateful.
In the years that followed, I had the joy of serving as an editor for the EMEYF blog “Willy & Penn”, which brought me a great deal of pleasure. I attended the Spring Gatherings in France, Austria, Sweden, and Poland, and met wonderful people along the way. And throughout it all, I was aware that I was drawing closer to leaving this community — and that I wanted to shape that leave-taking myself, quite deliberately.
I was so happy when EMEYF appointed me as a delegate to the Planning Committee for the All Age Gathering 2026. To be honest, this role mattered so much to me that I dared to nominate myself for it! And yet I was deeply moved when the community actually discerned me for it – together with my dear friend Emmie! Over the course of a year, I was able to bring in experience from EMEYF events as well as my own ideas. And I connected this event with the hope that it might ease my transition out of EMEYF.
The All Age Gathering was a wonderful experience! Facilitating the creative sessions in particular brought me great joy. Witnessing how open participants were to this “different kind of discussion”, and the profound, vivid drawings, sculptures, and poems that emerged from that exchange, moved me deeply. It was wonderful to see, so close at hand, how all the plans and thoughts of the preceding months came to life. And working with the planning team was such an excellent, pleasant, and inspiring collaboration — for which I offer my heartfelt thanks here to Annie, Emmie, Julia, Louis, Michael, Naomi, and Rose.
During the event, I found a good balance for myself between my commitment to the Planning Committee (since all manner of things still needed sorting and organising on site) and my own participation in the event itself. It helped me enormously that I made a point of taking part, as a participant, in offerings led by others — such as the singing, the three-hour Extended Meeting for Worship, board games, silent journaling or the patchwork session. The theme “River of Life”, and the reflections it prompted on life’s different stages, inspired me greatly and led me to reflect deeply on my own path through life.
Looking back over these 5 years I have spent with EMEYF, a sense of calm has now settled into my life (though anyone who saw my calendar might beg to differ…). I am now 40 years old, and I have the sense that I roughly know who I am and what I want. I comment on my grey hairs by saying “that’s where the wisdom comes bubbling out”. “Harmless Art” has, by now, become my profession, and I feel grown up. With the All Age Gathering 2026, I have grown into the great, worldwide community of Friends.
